KING John School’s Mark Sexton has spoken of his pride after seeing former pupil Jackson Wray help Saracens secure a second successive European title.

Wray played more than an hour of Saracens’ 28-17 win against Clermont Auvergne at Murrayfield on Saturday.

And PE teacher Sexton was delighted to see Wray enjoy another successful afternoon.

“The whole school is incredibly proud of Jackson and we sent a bulletin to everyone to let them know about the game,” said Sexton.

“It’s the equivalent of football’s Champions League and for Saracens to have won it again is outstanding.

“Jackson’s played a big part in that and he’s having another really good season.

“He’s doing really well to get into the team at seven and has been a really solid performer.

“I think he must have started about 90 per cent of the games and I think there are only two matches this season he hasn’t been involved in.

“Unfortunately one of those was the game he got me tickets for against Bristol.”

Wray will now be hoping to help Saracens defend their Premiership title.

But the 26-year-old had not even touched a rugby ball before attending King John.

“Jackson was more of a footballer when he first came to us,” recalled Sexton.

“He hadn’t touched a rugby ball but you could tell he had the potential to be good at it because he was a big, powerful lad.

“When he got to about 14 you could really tell just how talented he was and it was around that time he started playing for Essex and Westcliff.

“But what he has done since then is fantastic and it just goes to show what can happen if you work hard.”

However, it was not just rugby where Wray would shine during his spell at the Thundersley based school.

“Jackson still has the school hammer record and he was very good at it,” said Sexton.

“He was also district 100m champion and that pace obviously helped with his rugby.

“To be honest, he was talented in a number of sports but rugby was obviously the main one.

“We’re all really happy to see him doing so well and I sent him a message to say well done after the game had ended.”

Wray will now be back in action on Saturday when Saracens visit Exeter Chiefs in what promises to be a tough Premiership semi-final.
