IT has been yet another year of sporting success for Southend High School for Boys .

All five year groups celebrated reaching an Essex Cup final and the promising results came in three different sports.

The year eight and 10 teams both impressed in cricket, while year seven made the basketball final. Year nine made the hockey final while year 11 made it to the final in football.

On top of that, the school held their 102nd sports day. The event took place at Southend’s Garon Park to celebrate the forthcoming Olympics.

Years seven to 10 enjoyed Olympic-themed mass-participation activities and coaching in the morning in archery, swimming, cycling, fencing, wheelchair basketball, and taekwando.

And, after that, the whole school came together for the inter-house athletics sports day which impressed headteacher Robin Bevan.

“2012 will be a memorable year for all our students,” said Bevan.

“Southend High School for Boys has a national and international reputation for sporting success and we wanted the London Games and the Olympic values to be recognised and celebrated throughout the school.

“I was delighted to see more than 600 pupils given the opportunity to try their hand at a wide variety of Olympic and Paralympic sports, and their memories of the day will remain strong.

“Some pupils may even now pursue new opportunities to develop their talents.

“The day culminated with our annual athletics finals and presentations of trophies with Steve Wynn, former student and Olympic torch bearer.”
