Westcliff Lawn ended a 12-year wait to win the Leigh & Westcliff LTA Men’s Division One crown this week.

A 4-2 win over third-placed Rayleigh guaranteed Lawn the title with a match to spare.

The London Road club has won the league twice in the past. The first time was in 1997 and then again in 2000.

Rayleigh put up a good fight against the league leaders but losing the middle rubber handed Lawn the advantage.

The first rubber was split with Rayleigh’s Mark Rose and Dave Barham winning 6-3, only for Lawn’s Dan Thrale and Nick Spillett to take the secon set 7-5.

Graham Goodale and Jason Watkins defeated Phil Alderton and Steve Farmer 6-3 6-2.

John Blewett and Martin Scarfe then gave Rayleigh hope of securing a draw by leading 6-4 in the first set, before Neil Attwood and Geoff Spillett secured the win for Lawn with a 6-3 victory.

David Lloyd have one hand on the Ladies’ Division One title following their 5-1 win over Kent Elms.

The Eastwood club are four points ahead of Thorpe Bay with one match remaining and know that even if Thorpe get a 6-0 win, two points will be enough to see Lloyd crowned champions.

Rosie Clarke and Helen Sharpe defeated Elms’ Mandy White and Debbie Lincoln 7-6 6-3, before Keiko Petchey and Inara Gribuste split their match 7-6 5-7 with Jo Hancock and Cezara Dane.

But Vicky Wilson and Kitty Livingston secured the win for Lloyd by beating Kylie Barnett and Katie Cox 6-4 6-4.

But David Lloyd’s second string were defeated 5-1 by Hockley to confirm their relegation to Ladies’ Division Four following their first season in Division Three.
