ROY O’Donovan is revelling in his striker’s role at Southend United.

And he is again hoping to hit the back of the net against Oldham Athletic at Roots Hall tomorrow.

The forward scored his first goal in English football on his Shrimpers debut last weekend in the 3-2 triumph over Brighton and Hove Albion and, having previously been played on the right wing while at both Sunderland and Blackpool, the 24-year-old is enjoying playing in his favoured position.

“I think I’m at my best as a striker so I’m delighted to be back playing there,” said O’Donovan.

“I had been used on the right wing but I’m pleased to now be back up front and it was certainly nice to score again last Saturday too.

“It’s good for my confidence and hopefully I can get another one tomorrow against Oldham.”

O’Donovan trained yesterday despite suffering a slight thigh problem last weekend and he is expected to again line-up alongside the in-form Lee Barnard.

The Irishman is confident of striking up a good partnership with his fellow front-runner and is sure there are more goals to come for them both.

“We seem to have hit it off right away and the signs are there of a good partnership” said O’Donovan.

“It certainly does help playing alongside someone in such good form but he works really hard too so it’s great.

“There is a good team here and I already feel settled.

“It’s a nice place with nice weather and the manager and lads have all been great to me.”

O’Donovan also soon hopes to be feeling at home off the pitch too by moving into his own apartment.

But right now he is staying in the Roslin Hotel along the sea-front with Southend’s other recent loan signing George Friend.

“We have a dinners together every night and we’re like a happy couple at the moment,” joked O’Donovan.

“It does make it easier to be someone else but hopefully I’ll be able to move my missus down soon.”
