SOUTHEND United may have been issued another winding up order from HM Revenue and Customs, but the club are not under a transfer embargo.

Last season, Blues were denied permission to strengthen their squad because of their ongoing battle with the taxman.

But a source close to the club insisted that was not the case this time around and revealed Southend owe just a nominal fee — believed to be in the region of £30,000.

“The club are not under embargo as a consequence of HMRC’s action,” said the source.

“And Southend will continue to look for players in the market to strengthen our position to gain promotion.”

Cashflow remains a serious concern at Roots Hall, however the players have been paid and will continue to do so, added the source.

Manager Paul Sturrock may soon have to take advantage of not being under an embargo as Blues have a number of injury concerns for tomorrow’s clash at Torquay United.

The Scotsman has at least four players doubtful for his team’s trip to Plainmoor.

But he would not reveal who they were.

“We have a number of injury concerns and it’s far from ideal,” said Sturrock.

“I don’t want to say who has knocks but at least four players will be having late fitness checks.

“We may well have to get people in on loan and I have been looking high and low to see who is available.

“However, we won’t be rushed into making any panic signings and we will wait to make sure we get the right kind of player.”
