BLUES centre-back Peter Clarke hopes to spring a surprise over Fulham in his side's latest friendly tonight.

The defender is expecting a busy night against the Londoners at Roots Hall.

But he believes his side's superior fitness can see them secure an expected triumph.

"We're probably a bit further forward than them in pre-season because our league starts before theirs does so it would be nice to get a little shock and win the match," said Clarke.

"It's the highlight of our pre-season campaign, just like playing West Ham was last year, and it's always nice to play against teams in the top division.

"I'm sure they will be wanting to impress their manager as well and it should make for a good game."

The Shrimpers have already faced Great Wakering Rovers, Canvey Island and Thurrock during pre-season, scoring six goals without conceding at the other end.

And Clarke has been buoyed by the standard of the work so far.

"It's been going well," he said.

"It's been hard work and the legs are feeling sore and heavy but we will get the rewards in the end."

Full-back SImon Francis has also been encouraged by the performances but was quick to stress that results are not important at this stage of the season.

"People may be worrying that we drew with Canvey and only beat Wakering 2-0 but they shouldn't," he said.

"We've tried new formations and new players, some of whom haven't spoken a word of english but that's what happens at this time of year.

"I think we're doing well and I'm really enjoying pre-season.

"I've got my contract sorted and tonight is one we're looking forward to.

"Hopefully the gaffer will field his strongest side and we can really give them a game."
