CONCERNS a 'major incident' had unfolded on Southend seafront were raised last night, with a police cordon spotted blocking off an area behind Adventure Island.

It has since been confirmed by police an 18-year-old was left "seriously injured" after being attacked on the seafront.

However, the force were unable to disclose the circumstances which led up to the attack, including how the man was injured or whether a weapon was involved.

Here is all we know so far:

  • Emergency services swarmed to the seafront yesterday evening (June 1) following the assault on Marine Parade, with a police cordon swiftly put in place behind Adventure Island
  • Essex Police have confirmed they received reports of a disturbance involving a group of people around 6.45pm, before attending and finding an 18-year-old man seriously injured.
  • He was taken to hospital for further treatment.
  • Despite concern brewing on social media there had been an acid attack, Essex Police have since firmly shut down rumours and confirmed no substances were involved.
  • While three ambulances, a rapid response vehicle and two ambulance officers were also sent to the scene.
  • Police have issued their thanks to those who helped report the incident, and say it helped "an injured man receive the treatment he needed"
