A DAD says he was lucky to escape without being seriously injured after a hit-and-run crash on a roundabout.

Martyn McGrory has been left shaken and battling aches and pains after the car he was driving was hit at Rayleigh Weir on Saturday.

Police have launched an investigation after reports a car skipped a red light and then fled the scene after hitting Mr McGrory’s silver Peugeot.

The 50-year-old, from Canvey, said: “I had just dropped my wife off in Rayleigh for a night out and I was heading home and facing Thundersley.

“The lights changed and then a car, at speed, jumped the red light and came around the roundabout and smashed into the side of me.

“It spun me around 90 degrees and he kept going and I think he slowed down a bit but didn’t stop properly.

“I was just in shock and sat in the car and saw he had gone.

I couldn’t walk as my legs were shaking so much.

“It was really quick and a man who was behind me and saw it came over to check I was okay and to call to the police and ambulance.”

Mr McGrory has now been left without a car, with the driver fearing the car will be written off.

He has been suffering constant headaches since the crash.

Mr McGrory added: “I also feel angry as it’s affected my no claims discount and he’s got away with it.

“It was a nice, old car in good condition. He had no intention of stopping and I was on the scene for about an hour and a half.

“I didn’t go to hospital and don’t want to.”

A spokesman for Essex Police said: “We were called to reports of a collision on Rayleigh Weir roundabout around 7.30pm on Saturday 27 November.

“It was reported that a dark hatchback-style car had driven through red traffic lights and collided with another car. The driver of hatchback did not stop at the scene.
