Ensign's much-loved vintage open top bus route has been named Britain’s favourite in an online competition.

The number 68 takes passengers on an open-top tour along the seafront, passing through Southend, Westcliff, Chalkwell and Leigh.

The bus route has won the Twitter 2022-2023 World Cup of British Bus Routes – a knock-out competition of head-to-head votes.

The Southend route won the final with 54.2 per cent of the total 1,229 votes cast, beating out send place rival Lands End Coaster.

A spokesman for Ensign Bus Co said: “Thank you so much to everyone who voted for route 68. You’ve done us all proud.”

Photographer Simon Murdoch took this picture of the No 68 open top bus on Southend seafront in the summer of 2022.

The route is held sporadically during the warmer months to give fans of the service a chance to see the seafront from a collection of vintage buses.
