A TEENAGE girl has been arrested in connection with an assault which saw a man rushed to hospital with a head injury.

Essex Police received reports a person had been assaulted by two people in Warrior Square, Southend, at about 11.50pm on Saturday.

The victim, a man in his 50s, was taken to hospital for treatment for a head injury.

A 17-year-old girl, of Westcliff, has been arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm with intent and is currently in hospital.

Eyewitnesses said a police cordon remained in place near the Glasshouse Cafe for several hours after the assault.

An investigation into the incident has been launched and officers have appealed for witnesses to come forward.

A spokesman for Essex Police said: "A teenage girl has been arrested in connection with an assault in Southend.

"It was reported a man in his 50s had been assaulted by two people in Warrior Square at around 11.50pm on Saturday, September 30. He was taken to hospital for treatment on a head injury.

The police probe comes after six arrests were made in Southend city centre on Saturday night.

Officers based at a mobile police station outside the HSBC bank and Odeon cinema, in the Broadway, London Road, made four arrests in connection with weapons offences and two in connection with assault offences.

Det Supt Gary Biddle said the officers had "responded to incidents of violence and have ensured suspects were brought into custody".

The latest incident follows the arrest of a 15-year-old boy and an 18-year-old man after reports of a disturbance in Warrior Square less than two weeks ago which saw a man hospitalised with serious facial injuries.
