Police have given an update on their investigation after thugs "armed with a baseball bat" entered a Benfleet home and attacked the occupant.

Police were called to reports of an ongoing incident at a home in Kimberley Road, Benfleet, shortly before 7.10pm on Friday night.

It was reported three men entered an address and assaulted an occupant.

Officers were on the scene by 7.20pm, safeguarding the victim and carrying out enquiries to locate the suspects.

Later that night officers arrested a 38-year-old man, from Leigh, who was being questioned on suspicion of aggravated burglary.

Essex Police has now confirmed the man has been released on bail with conditions while enquiries continue until December 28.

They have also confirmed there was a report of a baseball bat being used during the assault.

No other arrests have been made at this stage.

Officers are appealing for any witnesses, or anyone with information or dash cam footage which could assist their investigation, to come forward.
