ECHOSPORT talks to Nathan Salt, co host of the RobRyanRed podcast, about Southend United signing Wrexham striker Jade Hyde on a season long loan deal.

How would you assess Jake's time at Wrexham?

"He started well and there was some belief during the pre-season that, given Paul Mullin’s link-up play, Hyde might actually finish the season as top scorer.

"He’s a traditional number nine in the respect that he’s a good finisher who likes to keep between the posts.

"But ultimately, despite a good start, he picked up an injury that he never seemed to bounce back from.

"When he got his fitness back Phil Parkinson had signed Ollie Palmer and he was now down the pecking order.

"His Wrexham career felt defined by a sliding doors moment on that injury early on."

What can Southend fans expect from him?

"A really good finisher if he’s provided with the service.

"He’s not a player who will want to find himself doing the dirty work down the channels but when fit he can be a good scorer.

"He showed in flashes with Wrexham an ability to turn half-chances into very good ones.

"Fitness is the only real concern in his game.

What was his fitness record like with you?

"This is the big concern.

"He had rotten luck after picking up a calf issue against Weymouth in December and that led to the Palmer signing.

"He's a great pro and will be popular in the dressing room but one injury appeared to lead to another at Wrexham and after a lightning start with us he never really got the opportunity to get back into the swing of things."
