SOUTHEND United striker Callum Powell is determined to help the Shrimpers ‘put things right’ against Maidenhead at Roots Hall on Monday.

Blues suffered a painful 2-1 defeat at Eastleigh on Saturday.

But Powell - who scored his first goal of the season in the setback - is already switching his sights onto bouncing back.

“Everyone is in shock we haven’t got anything from the game but we’ll go again and make sure we put things right on Monday now,” said Powell.

“It will be another good test and it’s a quick turnaround so we don’t have to think about this result for too long.

“That’s the beauty of the bank holiday though.

“If it doesn’t go in your favour on the Saturday you only have one day to think about it and you can’t dwell on it for long.”

The defeat means Blues have taken five points from their opening five games and sit 17th in the early National League standings.

But Powell felt the Shrimpers did not deserve to lose on Saturday.

“I thought we dominated,” said the 26-year-old.

“We got the goal in the first half and going into the second half I thought it opened itself up for us to impose ourselves more on the game.

“I thought we were going to see it out and a 1-0 win would’ve been a fair result.

“I think we would’ve been disappointed with a draw let alone a loss.”

However, Eastleigh equalised 13 minutes from time when substitute Danny Whitehall scored with a quickly taken free-kick from the halfway line.

And Powell felt the effort was unfortunate for Blues.

“On any other day he could try that shot from the halfway line 40 times and probably not score so we’ve had some bad luck there,” said Powell.

“If it wasn’t for that I think we go on to win it.”

Whittaker went on to score a second free-kick deep into stoppage time to secure victory for the Spitfires.

The substitute’s double strike meant Powell’s effort went unrewarded.

But the Blues striker was always confident he would soon work his way onto the score-sheet.

“I don’t get too downhearted with not scoring, especially the chances I’ve had so far,” said Powell.

“Ultimately I know how good I am as a player and I’ll keep persevering and keep working hard.

“I know when I do score it will give me a good platform to kick on and keep doing that.

“I’m always confident and I know that I’ll score.”
