THERE could be a familiar name in the Solihull Moors squad at Southend United this weekend.

Former Blues goalkeeper goalkeeper Darryl Flahavan made 351 appearances during a successful spell at Roots Hall which ended back in 2008.

But his 18-year-old son Aaron is now paving his own way in the game and has often been Moors’ back up shot-stopper this season.

“Aaron’s been at Solihull this season,” said proud dad Flahavan.

“He started their scholarship programme there this season and he’s progressing well.

“He’s training with the first team on a regular basis and he’s been involved with the matchday squad so it’s been really good experience for him.

“He’s looking forward to hopefully going to Southend on Saturday.”

Aaron has yet to make his first team debut for Solihull and, despite boss Neal Ardley sometimes opting not to name a substitute keeper on the bench, the teenager has travelled to matches as back up.

And the youngster is enjoying the experience.

“Aaron’s enjoying it there, he’s training on a full-time basis and working with Kevin Poole the goalkeeping coach,” said Flahavan.

“It’s been difficult for him because I’ve moved around with my coaching career and he hasn’t been able to settle.

“He started at Southampton and Portsmouth and he was up at Middlesbrough with me too.

“He’s been in at Villa and Birmingham but things didn’t work out for him there and now he’s gone in at Solihull Moors.

“He’s coming along well and we will see where it goes.

“But he’s enjoying himself at the moment and that’s the most important thing.

“He plays with the 18s and getting matchday experience in the National League too.

“He’s normally at the home games and he’s travelled to quite a few of the away ones too.

“He’s hopeful he might be involved in the game at Southend and fingers crossed it will happen and he will be at my old club which would be great for him.”

Flahavan enjoyed many memorable moments during his own spell at Roots Hall which included back to back promotions and a man of the match performance in a League Cup win against Manchester United.

And Aaron was also present for many of those matches.

“He came to every game but obviously he was really young at the time,” said Flahavan.

“He does remember going to Roots Hall and seeing me play and he’s obviously seen some clips on YouTube too.

“But he’s really looking forward to it if that opportunities arises.”

Flahavan now works as goalkeeping coach at Wigan Athletic.

However he continues to keep a close eye on Blues, especially with his former team-mate Kevin Maher in charge.

“I was delighted to see Kev get the job,” said Flahavan.

“They’re progressing well and Kev was a great appointment for the club with his history and the attachment he has to the club.

“He ticked all the boxes and I’m glad to see him doing well.

“Hopefully he’ll get a few more wins, which I’m sure he will, and he has Southend in those play-offs at the end of the season.”

But Flahavan’s main focus remains his own role with the Latics.

“The manager has changed and Kolo Toure has come in now,” said Flahavan.

“We’re in a bit of a predicament at the moment being bottom of the Championship.

“But we’re all working hard behind the scenes and hopefully we can turn some results around to try and get ourselves out of the bottom three.”
