SOUTHEND United’s ladies side are celebrating winning the first trophy in their history.

The Shrimpers beat Toby Ladies 3-1 in the Essex Women’s Trophy final at Great Wakering Rovers’ Burroughs Park ground this afternoon.

And boss Lewis Dodds was delighted with the win.

“It’s been hard work for five years and I couldn’t be happier,” said Dodds.

“The squad has grown and improved every season and I thought we deserved the win today.

“Hopefully this can help make women’s football bigger in Southend."

Georgia Wilson bagged a brace for Blues in the victory while Emily Pert was also on target.

And coach April Smith was proud to see the Shrimpers triumph

"I set the girls up five years ago and to get them to a cup final is big enough in itself but to win it, I’m actually quite emotional," said Smith.

"To have a ladies side that everyone is so proud of means a lot and it’s great to have something to celebrate.

"The girls work hard and listen and they deserve it.

"The local support means a lot too and hopefully people will keep coming back."
