SOUTHEND United have been given another 56 days to settle a winding up petition from HMRC.

The Shrimpers appeared in the high court this morning over a debt of £250,000 and have now been given until July 12 to pay up.

It was also revealed that three other companies had joined the petition.

Main club sponsor PG Site Services and Engie Power were both named but the third company involved is not known.

However, Judge Mark Mullen agreed to give the National League club more time to pay.

He said: "It’s true to say this is the first hearing of this petition and there is evidence before me that the debt can be paid in a reasonable time.

"This would seem to be something of a rolling basis."

It was also disclosed in court that the sale of the club is underway.

The club’s solicitor said: “The sale of the club is underway and progress is being made.

“Agents have been appointed.

Blues chairman Ron Martin was in court for the hearing and was confronted by an angry Shrimpers supporters immediately after leaving the building.
