CHRIS Wreh insists he had no option but to leave Southend United.

But the striker is still desperate for the Shrimpers’ future to be secured.

Wreh will be lining up for Hartlepool United next season after a clause in his Blues’ contract could not be triggered due to the club’s transfer embargo.

However, he is still keeping a close eye on events at Roots Hall.

And the 26-year-old hopes he will be taking on Kevin Maher’s side during the forthcoming campaign.

“It’s so difficult because even as of now some people have not been paid at the club and I honestly wish everyone there well,” said Wreh.

“I really do hope things change ASAP but for me personally things were very tough there and just out of the ordinary.

“We had a very strong group and management team and it made us closer during that period.

“But it’s tough and the option I had in my contract couldn’t be exercised because of everything going on at the club.”

Wreh initially joined Blues on trial last summer before signing on a permanent basis after impressing in pre-season.

The forward went on to score four goals in 29 appearances for the Shrimpers and is keen to remember the positives from his spell at Roots Hall.

“Overall I was grateful to play in front of such top fans who showed me love from day one,” said Wreh.

“I wish I could’ve done more but injuries and other factors played its part.

“I’ll try not to dwell on the negatives but hopefully things change around at the club, because that’s what the people there deserve and the fans as well.

“From the chants to the messages and speaking with them outside the stadium or in and around Southend they were always really supportive.

“I’d like to say thank you for that support.

“I love the Southend fans and wish them the best.”

However, Wreh’s focus is now on Hartlepool United.

And he is eager to impress in his new surroundings.

“I’m very excited to have joined Hartlepool,” said Wreh.

“It’s another big club with a great fanbase and I hope I can win them over also.

“I want an injury free season with plenty of good performances goals and assists and that’s what I will be working towards.”

Wreh helped Hartlepool beat Middlesbrough 2-1 in a pre-season friendly at the weekend but Blues have yet to play a single warm up fixture this summer due to a lack of players.

Matches against Canvey Island and Billericay Town have both been postponed but the Shrimpers are due to travel to Bishop’s Stortford this weekend.
