SOUTHEND United boss Kevin Maher felt Saturday’s well deserved 2-0 win at Woking was the perfect end to a memorable week for the Shrimpers.

Headers from Harry Cardwell and Gus Scott-Morriss secured all three points for Blues – just four days after it was announced Justin Rees and his consortium had agreed terms to buy the club.

And Maher was delighted with the determined display which also saw his side work their way out of the relegation zone.

“It’s a good end to a brilliant week for the football club and that’s everyone, not just the playing side,” said Maher.

“It’s the end of a lot of games in a short period of time and for the players to go and produce again was top drawer from them against a team who cause a lot of sides problems here.

“It’s a very difficult place to come and we’ve done well.”

Cardwell nodded the Shrimpers in front in the first half, following a well-worked move from a throw before Scott-Morriss made sure of the win with a header of his own from a corner routine.

And Maher was happy with both goals.

“We got a set piece right and a throw in so we’re pleased with that,” said Maher.

“Credit to Daz (Currie) with the corner he looked at yesterday.

"He came up with that one and we’re delighted for it to work and make it a bit more comfortable.

"Some of the football we played probably wasn’t as fluid as we wanted but these are the games where you have to dig in and stand up to balls coming in the box"

But Maher stressed it had been a big team effort.

"Everyone comes in who is asked to step up does step up," said Maher.

"Oli Coker has done that the few games and JD (Jason Demetriou) has too.

"I thought he was unbelievable today and with his knowledge of the game he rarely gets caught out.

"Kens (Ollie Kensdale) really had to defend properly too but right across the team everyone did well.

And that made it a memorable afternoon for the large travelling contingent of close to 1,000 fans.

"It’s brilliant for the fans after what they thought might happen to the club," said Maher.

"They see the football and know we’ve got a chance with what we’ve got here.

"If we can keep that together we can build something special."
