SOUTHEND United boss Kevin Maher heads into tomorrow’s FA Trophy clash with Hampton & Richmond boosted by news Blues are close to being taken over.

Maher has been hindered by the Shrimpers’ severe off-field issues since taking charge of the club back in October 2021.

And he therefore welcomed this week’s statement, issued by Justin Rees on behalf of the consortium, confirming a deal was still on course to be completed.

“The bigger picture is everyone at the club needs it,” said Maher.

“We’ve been waiting and the good news from the statement the other day is positive.

“The sooner it can come the better.

“It will be brilliant for everyone and we can all move forward to a bright future.”

Blues have impressed in the National League this season despite being hindered by a small squad and a 10 point penalty for financial irregularities.

Despite those difficulties the Shrimpers sit 15th in the league table but will be turning their attentions towards the third round of the FA Trophy at Roots Hall tomorrow.

And Maher is keen to take the competition seriously.

“As we do with league games, we’ll pick the strongest possible team we can that’s available to us and try to win the game,” said Maher.

“Hampton & Richmond are doing really well as well and they’re in good form.

“You can’t take anyone lightly and whenever we’ve played in the Trophy they’ve always been tough and tight games.”

Hampton & Richmond are currently third in National League South.

And Maher believes Mel Gwinnett’s team will be tricky to beat.

“They’re up the top of the league for a reason,” said Maher.

“I know Mel from Bristol Rovers, he has done a brilliant job there and they’re really competitive.

“You see what Yeovil are doing at the top of that league so for them to be in close enough distance shows how well they’ve done as well so it’s a tough game.

“We’ll have to perform well to get anything.”

Elsewhere in the FA Trophy this weekend, Billericay Town head to Wealdstone.
