SOUTHEND United ended a turbulent week with a 2-0 triumph against Eastleigh tonight.

Just two days on from being docked 10 points, the Shrimpers recorded a well-deserved win at Roots Hall.

And it was first half goals from Noor Husin and Harry Cardwell which saw Blues get back to winning ways in a match which was halted for four minutes by protesting supporters.

Kevin Maher’s side started on the front foot with Jack Bridge and Wes Fonguck both having efforts blocked before Harry Taylor did superbly well at the other end of the field as his fine sliding challenge stopped Chris Maguire registering an effort on target.

With 10 minutes on the clock, play was halted for four minutes as fuming Blues fans threw tennis balls onto the pitch while loudly chanting for under-fire chairman Ron Martin to leave the club.

But, three minutes after the match resumed, the Shrimpers went in front with Husin sending a controlled right footed shot into the left hand side of the net from 12 yards after Gus Scott-Morriss had seen a shot blocked.

Blues remained on top and doubled their lead in the 25th minute with Cardwell on target for the fourth time in five games.

The move for the goal was started by Dan Mooney who sent Jack Bridge free down the left hand side and his low cross was converted by a sliding Cardwell from close range.

Eastleigh soon came close to getting back into the game with Maguire somehow failing to score from close range.

But it was Blues who threatened just before the break as Mooney saw a close range shot pushed over the crossbar by Eastleigh goalkeeper Joe McDonnell.

After the break, Shrimpers shot-stopper Collin Andeng Ndi pushed away a curling free-kick from Charlie Carter before Aidan Barlow lobbed an effort wide of the right upright.

Blues responded by making their first change of the night in the 63rd minute as Oli Coker replaced Fonguck in the centre of the park before a second alteration followed in the 71st minute with Callum Powell taking the place of Mooney.

Powell soon saw a low 20 yard shot smothered down to his right hand side by McDonnell before the Shrimpers saw out the closing stages of a quiet second half to get back to winning ways.
