SOUTHEND United are set to play in another cup next season.

A newly formed competition will see 16 under 21 teams from Premier League sides up against the top 14 teams from last season’s National League along with Sutton United and Forest Green Rovers who were relegated from League Two.

The cup will see clubs initially placed into groups of four, with the non-league sides at home, before advancing into a knock-out phase, starting with the quarter-finals.

It will be run similarly to the EFL Trophy for sides in the Football League but the final will not be played at Wembley.

It is believed National League clubs were informed of the details of the competition in an online call this afternoon.
