A water firm has warned some customers' supplies will continue to be affected throughout the day after a major main burst.

Essex and Suffolk Water is carrying out emergency repairs to the main in Rayleigh High Street.

It burst yesterday (Wednesday, November 17) morning and flood water is said to have caused part of the road to collapse.

A spokesman for Essex and Suffolk Water said some customers would continue to experience delays to water supplies throughout today while repairs continued.

He also revealed traffic lights set up in the town centre will be in place for some time as a result of the repair work and damage to the road.

The spokesman said: "We were made aware of a burst on one of our larger water pipes yesterday morning in the High Street area of Rayleigh.

“Due to the size of the pipe there has been some damage to the road and temporary traffic lights are in place to keep the area safe for our crew and motorists while we carry out the repair.

“Around 50 customers in the area may experience a temporary loss of water supply at 11pm tonight while the repair on the pipe is carried out, and we will be providing them with regular updates on the progress of the work.

“After the temporary shut-down this evening water supply will return to normal, however it is expected that the temporary traffic measures will be in place for the next few days until the road is restored.

“We’d like to apologise for the inconvenience the burst has caused to those affected and thank our customers for their patience and understanding while we get things back to normal as quickly as we can.”
