Police officers in Southend have issued a warning to residents after reports of rogue traders.

Residents in the Shoebury area have reported rogue traders operating in the area offering roofing or driveway cleaning services.

Cold callers have been knocking at residents' doors and "targeting the vulnerable", police say.

An Essex Police spokesman in Southend said: "We have recently received reports of rogue traders operating in the Shoebury area offering roofing and/or driveway cleaning.

"Criminals target the vulnerable and offer unnecessary maintenance at a high price. Following the payment, no service is provided or the cost of the work agreed is dramatically increased.

"Residents have been contacted by cold callers knocking at the door. Contact out of the blue should always be treated as suspicious—don’t be rushed into make a decision.

"Please look out for your elderly/vulnerable family members or neighbours."

Residents are urged to "remember to take five".

Police say they should "stop", "challenge" and "protect".

A spokesman added: "Stop - taking a moment to stop and think before parting with your money or information could keep you safe.

"Challenge - could it be fake? It’s ok to reject, refuse or ignore any requests. Only criminals will try to rush or panic you.

"Protect - contact your bank immediately if you think you’ve fallen for a scam and report it to Action Fraud."
