SOUTHEND United chairman Ron Martin feels it would be a ‘monumental failure’ if the Shrimpers drop out of the Football League.
The second from bottom Blues are six points from safety with just nine games to go.
But Martin is not giving up hope of staying up.
“I’m not a quitter and nor is Mark (Molesley) or any of his staff,” said Martin.
“There’s a great deal of spirit in the squad, there’s no doubt about that and no one has given up.
“But it would be a monumental failure for me to be in the National League.”
However, if that does that happen, Martin confirmed Blues would battle hard to get back up.
“If we fail to stay up it will be a disaster but it won’t stop me investing to get back up as quickly as we can,” said Martin.
“I never thought we would be in this position, I thought we would be a mid-table team and our results more recently suggest that too.
“I understand the fans’ passion but I’m passionate too, it’s my life.”
