PROPOSED jobs cuts at Essex County Council would damage public services and hit those on low incomes, a trade union has warned.

Unison says a leaked report shows the council is planning to axe 85 full-time positions and introduce a two-year pay freeze.

The union says it puts forward a reduction in the working week from 37 to 35 hours, with an accompanying cut in pay, and plans to stop sick pay for the first three days.

The document also proposes to stop bonus payments for the lowest paid employees, including entry-level staff on a £12,000-a-year salary, Unison says. Unison says the 18-page document was anonymously delivered to its offices in Chelmsford on Friday.

Council spokesman Michael Page said the plans were part of a “forward thinking” approach in response to changes in the economy and political climate.

He said: “No recommendations have been taken forward.

“When any options are considered by cabinet as being suitable for detailed review, in line with usual protocols, they will be discussed fully with key stakeholder groups such as the trade unions.”
